Evaluation of final music video

For our music video assignement we created a music video called "nerdish fantasy". We wanted to make our Video a funny paradey type of video.this was becuase we felt that with the actors we had we would not be able to create a video with out it being a funny one.

My main roles and responsabilites were very varied on this assingment. These responsiblities were bokking the studios for recording, creating the green screen effect in edditing, buying and obtaining props and i also had to look after the equipment for the week so i took it home and brought it to the shoots and i finally had to act on camera.thses responsibilities were good to have as it was a good learning experience however i did feel that it was taking the mik sometimes as i was expected to carry everything or at least all the equipment. i also felt that i wasnt very involved in the making or designing of the video and that it wasnt really many of my ideas but i also thought that as i wasnt listened to much i it meant that not everyone was sure what was happening and that meant we were not very organised.

i felt i didnt have very much of a contribution and part of that was thaqt when i tried to get involved more in the desicions i was ignored and i gave up on trying to get very involved and i felt that could have been becuase i was not bothering to much. however i did feel that other members of our group where planning it between themselves and not with the rest of the goup, this was also because they had very overpowering personalities and i felt they thought thatb they were going to plan everything and other members of the group would do nothing. this was also bacuse i was working with good freinds and that meant that contributions were put down as they thought it was silly as sometimes i can be very stupid and silly myself around them. so next time i think i would work with less overpowering people and also not with as gooder freinds that would just tell me no.

i have learnt a number of things while doing the music video project most of them parcaitcal, however they have benfitted me all the same. i have firstly realised how to do call sheets better and how to create strip boards. lighting has also benfited in my learning this time round as i have learnt how effective lighting is and how it being ove just a little bit caneffect the whole lighting on a picture. also i have learnt how to analyis music videos better and know how to take them apart piece by piece.

Purposes of Music Videos

History:

The first music videos to be created or broadcast were in 1960, but some do argue and say that they were after the 60`s, this is because many big artists around this time, such as the Beatles and bob Dylan, where being asked to perform at many different venues all over countries and continents within the space of a few days. For example they would be doing a concert in Spain then in France the next day. So they would send in videos of themselves performing tracks both old and new, this caught on and lots of artists began to do this so it meant their tracks would be heard on different music shows like top of the pops but that was it so only the big artists would be heard. Artists in the 70`s began to become more inventive with their videos and it gave them more identity and made them more recognisable, but it was in the 80`s when music videos really became popular with most artists as in 1981 MTV was launched. This meant that it was very important for artists to create music videos as it was the main way for their music to be heard globally and to make the artist more popular, it was actually British artists who were making music videos so the US charts saw an invasions of British artists such as Duran Duran, Adam and the ants and the cure.

here is an example of one of the first music videos that was produced for the beatles, this was made in the 1960`s and as you can see it really doesnt make sence to what the song is on about but it setup the idea of music videos not making any sence at all really and making the an new inventive way of producing media however if you look at a video from the 1970`s it is the jackson fives abc but as you can see the hae added somehting new to the music video genre as they have made a video with them actually doing a concert for the video so it is a very performanced based video where as the beatles on was a very narative video.

so you can see their have been alot of changes to music videos over the years and if we look at the 80`s we can see that they have become a little like short films or videos an example of this is micheal jacksons thriller:

as you have seen from this video it is a long video for a music video as it is 10mins or more however this is only part of the video it is actuall about 15mins originally. this was so horrific when relised that it was put on after 9 oclock however it is still a music video but as you can see they now can tell a story and it has shown how creative they have become but it also shows how popular and dramatic music videos have become because even people who were not born in this time period they still now exactley how the video goes and can remeber the video and find it a ver good video. it made people want to see more music videos and want buy the albums of this particular artist more. it also made people feel that music videos were something to see and not to be missed aand gave artist more freedom to be imaginitave with their music and the music videos.

Purpose of Music Videos.

Music videos are a good way to promote an artist and their track, the way it can promote a track is by it being a visual representation of a track so many people who watch the video they will often remember the track for the video rather than the track. It also creates more opportunities for the track to be heard rather than it being just heard on audio mediums such as radio or CD but it can also be heard on more popular mediums like TV and the internet like YouTube or other sites that have music videos on them, this means that they are heard by both, audience`s that prefer to listen and those that are more happy to be visual so they artist will essentially reach a wider audience. Another big purpose for music videos is that they can be used to highlight three or four tracks from an album, this is a bite more different now a days as more people can download only tracks instead of a whole album, in the past if people wanted to buy tracks they would have to buy a whole album so if artist made videos for a number of tracks on an album they would make the audience want to buy it more so they can promote a whole album by their videos of the different tracks. one example of how a music video has made the sales of a track go up and the popularity is journey`s dont stop beleiving which was taken by a tv company and put into the program glee and they made it into a video here are the two videos......

tis is the original video when the track was 69 on the uk chart in 1981.(i think it is the right one) it has had 2,654,374 veiws, but this next video is another video that features the song from the show of glee.
sadley i could not find a desnet clip but after this was released the song seemed to be every were and if you look at the chart positions thesong became much more popular and people bought it more. if you look at this example you will see that their has been an increase of popularity for the band and the track...

as you can see because of the band allowing another music video to be realesed in 2010 they went from being 62 in the uk chart in the 80`s when they had just released the track to now being number 6 in the charts. this show that bands can influence the popularity of a music video .
Music videos are also very good at extending the income of artists and the tracks they make. Videos will often keep artist in the public eye for a longer time after they have released their album this can be for a number of months but in alot of cases now a days if a track made it very big in the 80`s or 90`s or earlier it could still be played making it very popular among younger generations. Music videos can also help to recoup some of the production costs of recording the music initially as if the video gets alot of sales for the track or album, so if it makes alot of money by the video being shown alot and making it very popular, the artist will make alot of profit.
Music videos have now become much more accessible since the 80`s as there are a number of places in which you can view music videos. One that was around in the 80`s is television but instead of just one channel committed to music their are now 30 to 35 music channels a couple are MTV the original one with kerrang, hits TV and flaunt to name a few. Another way which is thought of as a revolutionary way is the internet you now have YouTube, vodpod and videoocure plus hundreds of others like MySpace. Another way which is now becoming more popular and is more easy for peoples life styles, as you can travel with it and watch it when ever and were ever is downloads, theses can be seen and downloaded on to iPods, mobiles and blackberries and other portable mediums.

Analysis of Contemporary Music Videos

The first video I`am going to analyse is of Linkin Park- the track is called "What I`ve done", the reason I have chosen this video is because it has alot of different edits and their are alot of clips that are cut between.
here is the video:

This music video was directed by Joe Hahn, he is in fact the bands DJ so it was done by one of the bands members so their was more control in what the band wanted. It was released 2nd April 2007 about 22 days before the album which the song is on was actually released,so it promoted the album and made people want to buy the album for the single. Unfortunately I couldn't find any references to the cost of making the video.

Mise-en-scene
Their is a general use of mise-en-scene in the video, as you can see from the video is of nature and history. This is because alot of the shots are of the out side world, it is also because alot of the clips or scenes are in grey and of historical things that have happened in the past. The mise-en-scene of nature is also played up by that fact that most of the scenes have three main colours of blue, green and ground brown colour these in a way represent the common colours of nature so in some way they could have been saying that humanity has destroyed nature and the earth and we should be sorry for what we have done.

Cinematography
The use of cinematography is also very interesting as the lighting of the video is bright but also very consistent this is very good as it causes the shot to be more interesting as alot of the shots of the lead singer or guitarist have over exposure on their shoulders so it make it more interesting for the audience member and it give them more height. Their are lots of different shots that are very experimental but some of them are repeated alot, some of these interesting shots are of the lead singer, they are low shots and high shots and a couple of the shots are tracking shots that have been done by a steady cam but they do give a good effect.

Editing or Visual effects
The editing of this video has been vital for it to work as their are lots of cuts from the band to the clips of history and things of the earth i.e. the grand canyon. The edit of these cuts have been done to go with the speed and intensity of the music track, if you notice the speed of the cuts get faster and their are more cuts as the track gets more intense and as the beat gets quicker.

Relationship between the Lyrics and Visuals
The relationship between the lyrics and the visuals is very good as the visuals in a way interpret what the lyrics are saying, this is made very possible as the director is part of the band so when the song was written he would know what the band were meaning. If you notice the first part of the song is all about regretting what they have done and wanting to whip the slate clean, for this part of the video you have clips from history of dramatic events in history that we all know about and that have changed the world such as Nazism or civil rights. The second part of the song then goes into starting over and changing also becoming new this is reflected by having clips of embryos and week old children which would represent new life so in a way it is trying to say that the second part of the song is on about being born again to forget what they/ we have done.

Relationship between the Music and Visuals
Their is also a strong relationship between the music and the visuals as movement of the visuals goes along with the beat of the music. This is something that is very common in music videos however with this music video you can see the movement going along with the beat more than some other videos if you look closely you can see in one part that when the drum hits the drums they cut to a clip of trees being blown with a high gust of wind, so it makes the effect that he is hitting the wind into the trees. to see what i am talking about look at the video at the time of 2:05 and you will see what i mean.

Intertextuality
Their is a fair bit of intertexuality in the video as in alot of the clips their are references to different problems that face our world like pollution or global warming also war. The video has references to the Iraq war to make people think about whether they support it also alot of the other references makes people think about the other issues the world faces and what they think about it.

Genre characteristics
This video contains alot of the common characteristics of a rock video however it is more of a plain light hearted rock video rather than having a proper hard rock video. The reason this is a light hearted rock video but still a rock video is because the band is all wearing black and are performing in the common style of a rock band but they don't have the girls or the really depressive style of being very doom and gloom but in fact it is brighter than they normally are, however it is still rock as it does have the common shot of dramatic drum playing or of the lead singer having a close up.

Performance, Narrative or Concept based
The video is more performance based and a small bit of narrative and not really concept based. The reason for it being more performance based is fairly obvious as the band are playing in the whole thing oer most of it as they are not shown performing only when their is clips being shown. The narrative part of it that comes into it is the whole sort of regretting the things of the past and starting over, this shown by the oreder of the videos that go from the past clips to the new born clips so it tells the story of what has happened on the earth in the past can be forgotten or washed away and those effected can try to start again and be re-born if you get my meaning.

How well does the Promo Promote the band
This promote the band well as it promotes the band well as it shows them as a good rock band but it also show them as creative and can attract a range of audiences, this is because alot of people can watch this video and relate to them and make them think. It also makes the band look like they care more about what alot of people care about and not just what they care about but also it isnt about just what the band has experienced and it doesn't refer to the bands personal experience.

The Intended Audience
I feel that the intended audience are young people aged 16- 25 that like rock type tracks but also have a bit of time to reflect, this is because the clips are things that young people know of and also it is very modern and fast moving at times .

The next Music video i`am going to analyse is the killers-`some body told me` the reason for choosing this track is firstly a song that i like alot and also it is a very inventive video.

The music video for "Somebody Told Me", was filmed in February 2004 in California and was directed by Brett Simon.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somebody_Told_Me#Music_video)

Mise-En-Scene.
The mise-en-scene of this video is very good and interesting. The location is of somewhere in the desert, which makes the band seem very different and odd. This is very good for the bands image as it makes them more out their than other bands in their type of genre. The costume for this video is also very good as it is them in a casual suit, so it gives the feeling that the band are smart but also relaxed. It also fits with the audio track as it gives the impression that they are singing about a party or being in a club which is how they are dressed. Their are not any props in the video so i cant really say much about them. Another bit that is very interesting about the set is that the background or back drop is a video screen that has projected onto it shots of the band so it is a very good effect it also has other visuals that go with the music .

Cinematography.
The cinematography has been played with alot in this track but it is extremely good. firstly the type of shots that have been used range an awful lot, their are alot of mid shot and also wide shot plus their are a few MCU shots, the interesting thing though is that they jump around with the speed of the track as when the track gets faster so does the cuts between the shots but also you see alot of the MCU shot cross fading into wide shots but what makes them more interesting to watch is that as the cross fade happens you see it tracking into a wide shot or zooming out into wide shot. in one of part of the video you can tell that they have used a jib as it goes from a mid shot of the lead singer into a cross fade to the jib panning down and pulling back into a wide shot, this has been done very well and creates a very good effect for the viewer. the lighting on this video is also very interesting as it is very dark then at the end of the video it becomes lighter this is more to demonstrate night and day. the light has also been done very cleverly at some points of the video as the only part of the video that is actually lite is the backs of the band and the dancers so it creates silotets, this has been done by having a big screen video behind them and having that as the only light.

Interesting edited or Visual effects.
in this video their are a lot of interesting effects that have been created with the use of a large veiwing monitor that has been added into the set behind the band. if you look then you can see that some of the shots have the band member being mirrored or even another band member being on the screen behind the one on the camera. their have also been many effects created by the editing of the video. this is the green screen that has been done to make one of the shots all blue but with a hint of cartoon added to it. one other edited thing that has been done which makes the video more interesting i the effect that they have done of words coming out of the monitor screen behind the band to go out of the screen and in front of the band with a wipe effect.

relationship between the lyrics and visuals.
the relationship between the lyrics and the visuals is fairly good but the visuals don't give the scene that you would expect from hearing the lyrics, what i mean is that the lyrics give and image of a party or a club but the visuals are obviously of a desert. however the visuals do match the visuals in some areas as it contains parts of where it says "that looks like a girl Friend", they have siloets of women coming on the screen, also the lyrics that say about it being some place that's not like many others it sort of suggests it as they are set in somewhere that not many people would have a video to a song like this set in a desert.

relationship between the music and the visuals.
their is a strong relationship between the music and the visuals as the speed of the cuts and the movement goes with the speed of the track. also the visual movements go with the beat of the music if you look at the cuts and the movement of the band members it goes along with the beat as they are to each of the beats, however the cuts are for only certain beats and the movement goes from 2-4 beats till they move.

use of intertextuallity
their has been a big use of intertextuality but not of common products however it has beeen used to promote the band by it being the bands name that is played on the big screen behing thm but istead of it bing scroll across the screen normally theyn have infact scrolled it backwards so you could fnid your self trying to figure it out but in fact it is also to subliminal messaging by getting veiwers to look at it that way.also the setting they have used many bands have used that same type of setting or locations for example linkin park in "what ive done", so the location is also in a way intertaxualltiy as it is advertising those bands that are in their genre who have done the same type of thing.

genre characteristics
the video also containes a few characteristics of the indie music genre, as it has the whole band performance. they also have the visuals that the genre usually has, as it is the whole moving electronic visuals that videos like "let it rock by little wayne". also they are dressed in the costume that most indie bands wear in their videos.

Perfomance, narrative or concept
this video is very much a perfomance based video as the band are playing throught the whole video as live. however you could say that it does have a small bit of narrative as they are in the desert and are saying that they are in a place that isnt like normal or in the world, but the performance base of it is very dominante as they way hey move and sing also play looks like they are performing fo the audience.

how well does the promo promote.
this video/ promo promotes the band very well as they have the bands name all over the video, also it shows the band as very good performers. the way in which the band is represented in this video is that they are very invetive and active also it show them as the cool old school band by them being in suits but also the are performing and keep it simple, which in a way makes the band also be shwon to not care about their image and weather they can attract audiences by having sexy girls but in fact they show that they care more about the music and not over complicating their video.

intended audience.
the intended audince for this video is those aged 16-28 who like indie music however it is a very well known song that is like by people who like all sorts of genres, so in a way i think it could be aimed at anyone aged 16-28 that are big lovers of all genres and those who really like indie music.

Research into Music Video Director

The director I have researched is:

Wayne Isham

Wayne has been working in the media industry for 26 years. he started out as a cameraman, working on the set of "caught in the act" which was the music video for the track by the Styx. he then went on to direct the video for motley Crue and their track " smokin in the room boys".since he directed his first video Wayne has directed 60+ music videos with loads of famous artists such as Bon Jovi, Whitney Huston, Ozzy Osbourne, Micheal Jackson and journey. he has also directed many newish bands that have released music in the last 5 years and these artists are Kelley Clarkson, muse, Leona Lewis and and Shayne ward. the latest video he directed was resistance by muse.

Wayne Isham`s style of video varies with the time that they were made. what i mean is if you notice he went from being very rock to being more pop.Alot of his videos are of the bands concerts or live performances. His earlier videos that are not of concerts are bizarre ones but they go along with the genres as they are very hard rock type of genres. his more resent videos are hip hop ones that are not as strange but they are still oddly located.their is one aspect of his videos that you do notice alot is the cinematography of the videos as the lighting of the videos are similar to one another as they are fairly bright, but the lighting is very much according to the genre that the artist`s music is common to the artist.

This is one of waynes older videos by motley crue, it was released in 1985. sadley this is not the full version of the video as their is more at the start. this is a very common music video of waynes as it has the band performing at a concet however at the start it has a very odd begining as it is in different locations of each of the band memebers n=but these locatiobns are very odd but he also has the beginig of the concert which has been show very interestingley as it uses still images to make people look like the are moving very statically. another video he did in his earley years that is very similar to this is bon jovi`s you give love a bad name.

the start of this video is not like the other video however it has the same context, as it is of the bands live performance. one very interesting part of cinematography for this video is that it has a few slow action shots and the band also interacts with the camera. another video that is a concert type concept video that wayne has directed, which is from his earley years is Black Cat - Janet Jackson

this video again is a concert based video. if you notice the simillarity between this video and the perviouse two is their is and intro on the video to create a build up of excitment to make the veiwer want to see the video even more and to make them get more excited about it. he has also used stills in this video just like the on with motleu crue but he hasnt used them as much this time. another concert type based video he has done that is a little more modern is resistance by muse.

if you compare this video to his earleir ones you can see that the style hasnt changed and all that has really happened ius that it has become more modern. he still has the build up at the start, he also has the chots of the crowed and alot of panning shots just like the previouse ones. he also has the whole band dramatic shot of them walking to the stage through the tunnel but even though he has very similar styles of shooting the videos they are still just as effective as they used to be.

as you can see he is a very important and successful director that has worked with many people of big names but also he has many different styles in the way ha shots his videos the inly really consistant styel is of the concert based videos. he has acheivwed alot and has had a very succesfull run as a director but i am now going to show what the audience response is to his work:
